UPDATE: April 20, 2022: Motif FoodWorks filed a petition with the Patent Trial and Appeal Board challenging the validity of the Impossible Foods patent at the center of this case. Through this petition, Motif is asking judges for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to revoke Impossible Foods' patent. Motif argues that before Impossible Foods was issued its patent, several previous patents were issued regarding meat substitutes, composition of meat analogs and heme proteins.

"We are confident the Patent Trial and Appeal Board will agree with our view that the patent never should have been issued and revoke it," Motif said in a statement. "Our industry should work together to grow the plant-based category for the greater good – to benefit people and the planet. Competition is healthy. And it should play out in the marketplace, not the courts.”
